Traffic Safety Tips with Sgt. John Perrine – Episode 01: Any Tips for Driving This Summer?

I’m Sgt. John Perrine. I’ve been an Indiana State Trooper for 14 years now. Last year, I’ve been the Indiana Public Information Officer for the Indiana State Police in the Indianapolis district, doing a lot of community programs, school programs, media relations, public relations, things like that. . . .

I’m a firearms and tactics instructor, and . . . that’s it! That’s it—that’s all, you know all about me now.

Now we’re coming into the warmer months here in Indiana, and it’s important to know that, although maybe not the snow and the ice hazards exist, we still have those risks of heavy rain, standing water, and fog. But more importantly, you have to limit those distractions inside your vehicle. You need to put down your cell phone, ask your passengers to talk quietly so that you can focus on the most important thing: driving your car.

Make sure you’re not using your cell phone, make sure you’re using the safety features inside your vehicle, but more importantly, make sure you’re looking around. We see a big increase in crashes in Indiana involving motorcycles in the early warmer months. Sometimes motorcycles are difficult to see. But whenever you’re stopped at an intersection, making a lane change, you need to really pay close attention and look particularly for those motorcycles that don’t necessarily take up as much space. They tend to hide in our blind spots. Make sure you’re physically checking those blind spots so we can reduce the number of crashes.
