Two Indianapolis firefighters who were aiding injured motorists at a crash site were themselves injured in a subsequent I-65 car accident.
Firefighter Pinned During I-65 Car Accident
The I-65 car accident took place at mile marker 117 near 38th Street at approximately 3:50 a.m. on September 7, 2024. The Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) had already been called to the location in response to a two-car collision.
One group of firefighters had arrived in IFD Ladder 30, which was parked in the far right lane to block traffic while they assisted the passengers of a car that had come to rest in a grassy area off the side of the interstate. Another group of firefighters was attending to the occupants of a second car that was positioned a few hundred feet from Ladder 30.
A third car then attempted to drive between Ladder 30 and the grassy area and proceeded to strike two of the firefighters who were present. One firefighter was propelled into the air from the force of the I-65 car accident, while the second was pinned beneath the front of the car.
Alcohol and Speed Considered Possible Factors
Both firefighters were transported from the scene of the I-65 car accident to Eskenazi Health, where one was treated and released for minor injuries. The other firefighter reportedly sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, though the IFD noted that he was “alert and oriented.”
The I-65 car accident is currently under investigation by the Indiana State Police, who took the car’s 30-year-driver into custody. Alcohol and speed are allegedly being considered as possible factors.
