Man Killed in Fort Wayne Wheelchair-Involved Collision

A man has been killed in a Fort Wayne wheelchair-involved collision that marked the 40^th motor vehicle fatality this year in Indiana’s Allen County.

Fort Wayne Wheelchair-Involved Collision Under Investigation

The Fort Wayne wheelchair-involved collision took place at the intersection of State Boulevard and Crescent Avenue at approximately 6:00 a.m. on December 5, 2024.  It is believed that a 46-year-old Fort Wayne man had been traveling in the road in his wheelchair when he was struck by a passing motor vehicle at that time.

By chance, emergency personnel from the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority happened to arrive at the scene shortly afterward.  They attempted to provide medical care before pronouncing the man dead from what were subsequently determined to be “blunt force injuries due to a motor vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash.”

The accident is currently being investigated by officers from the Fort Wayne Police Department, who stated that a preliminary review of surveillance video from local businesses and dash cam video from the ambulance suggested that speed was not a factor.

While the Fort Wayne wheelchair-involved collision was initially characterized as a hit-and-run, it was later reported that the driver who struck the deceased actually returned to the crash site and has been cooperating with the investigation.
