Indianapolis Veterans’ Shelter Fire Displaces Dozens

Dozens of homeless veterans have been displaced by a massive Indianapolis veterans’ shelter fire that occurred on Saturday night.

Three Victims Transported to Hospital

Emergency personnel were called to the scene of the Indianapolis veterans’ shelter fire at around 9:45 p.m. on October 26, 2024.  The blaze had broken out at Manchester Apartments, a transitional housing facility for homeless veterans, located in downtown Indianapolis in the 900 block of North Pennsylvania Avenue.

Units from the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) arrived to find the second floor of the two-story building in flames and people still trapped inside, though firefighters managed to rescue 18 of them by 10:06 p.m.

A total of 48 former members of the U.S. military had been living at the facility at the time of the Indianapolis veterans’ shelter fire, which took three-and-a-half-hours to extinguish.  Fortunately, the IFD reports that all of the residents survived.  However, three victims were transported to Eskenazi Hospital with “slight injuries.”

Cause of Indianapolis Veterans’ Shelter Fire Unknown

Manchester Apartments is operated by Helping Veterans and Families of Indiana, Inc., which provides homes to more than 150 veterans across 14 properties, as well as employment services and a pantry for veterans “at risk of or experiencing homelessness.”  Because the complex sustained catastrophic damages, the veterans who had been staying there have been moved to area hotels.

The cause of the Indianapolis veterans’ shelter fire remains unknown, but it is being investigated by the IFD in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
