I-65 Semi-Trailer Crash Leaves One Dead

At least one person is dead following a late night I-65 semi-trailer crash in Indianapolis that involved multiple vehicles.

Vehicles Catch Fire in I-65 Semi-Trailer Crash

The I-65 semi-trailer crash took place at around midnight on November 8, 2024.  At that time, a driver seated in a stalled vehicle on northbound I-65, near the 113.9 mile marker, was on the phone with Illinois State Police (ISP) dispatchers when the vehicle was struck from behind by a second vehicle.

The force of that collision sent the second vehicle spinning into the path of a northbound semi-trailer, resulting in a violent collision in which the truck and the vehicle it hit both caught fire.  According to the ISP, the truck’s driver was able to escape, but the driver of the other vehicle was trapped inside the wreckage and later pronounced dead at the scene of the I-65 semi-trailer crash.

The Indianapolis Fire Department and IEMS subsequently arrived to extinguish the fire and attend to the two surviving drivers, neither of whom had sustained serious injuries.  It was not immediately known why the stalled vehicle had broken down, though it appears that a malfunction caused it to shut off, which left it stuck in the left lane without working lights.

The I-65 semi-trailer crash is currently being investigated by the ISP Crash Reconstructionists, who are also working alongside the Marion County Coroner’s Office to identify the deceased.
