What to Do After a Truck Accident

It can be difficult to think clearly in the aftermath of a truck accident, but there are important steps you should remember to take to better protect yourself and any case you may have. Hi, I’m speaking on behalf of Hensley Legal Group, a personal injury law firm based out of Indiana. I’d like to discuss what to do after a truck accident. You run a risk of getting into another accident with an approaching vehicle if you remain on the road for too long, so move to a safe place before you do anything else. Take out your phone and dial 911 so that emergency personnel will arrive to document the truck accident and attend to the injured. Be sure to give a full account of what happened to the responding officer, since an inaccurate police report could be detrimental to your case. Seek treatment as soon as you can, ideally from paramedics at the scene. Any delays in care could hinder your recovery and allow doubt to be cast on the causal relationship between the truck accident and your injuries. Exchange information with the truck driver and anyone else involved. Make sure you take down everyone’s name, address, phone number, email, insurance company and policy number, driver’s license, vehicle year, make, and model, and license plate. Don’t forget to ask about the truck’s owner and any company using the truck at the time of the accident as well, and try to get the names and numbers of witnesses who are present. A visual record of the crash site could be invaluable in establishing liability and capturing your damages, so take pictures and shoot video of your surroundings, along with any logos, text, or identifying information painted or printed on the truck itself. Notify your insurance company right away so that you can remain in compliance with the terms of your policy and take advantage of any benefits that it offers.
