In July 2024, Casey, a 39-year-old project coordinator for a mechanical contractor, was attempting to turn left into her mother’s apartment complex in Greenfield, IN.
But despite having made this exact same turn at this location so many other times in the past, she soon realized that this time was going to be different when a Ford Econoline van “with no intention of slowing down whatsoever” suddenly appeared in her rearview mirror.
“Forever Engraved in My Mind”
Before Casey had a chance to react, the van slammed into her Dodge Durango and pushed it into the opposite lane of traffic, where it violently collided with another vehicle and was completely totaled.
According to Casey, “My rear end got smashed, and my front end, my radiator, was in my dashboard,” though it may be the “the sound of the metal, the van hitting my vehicle” that she believes will be “forever engraved in my mind.”
The accident left physical marks as well. Casey “busted her face on the steering wheel” and needed nine stitches to close a gash across her left eyebrow, resulting in what she calls a “Harry Potter scar” that becomes a painful “topic of conversation” whenever it isn’t fully covered with makeup.
Additionally, Casey sustained extensive facial nerve damage that has caused her teeth to begin dying and prevents her from eating on the left side of her mouth, along with persistent neck and back pain, severe headaches, and exacerbation of her multiple sclerosis symptoms.
Moreover, she has developed an intense fear of driving that made it impossible for her to return to her former job.
Stiff Opposition from the Defendants
In seeking fair compensation for her injuries, Casey encountered stiff opposition from the defendants, who included the driver and the owner of the van that struck her.
“The defense was pulling at straws to try to make it my fault,” she said, with the driver accusing her of “making an illegal left-hand turn” and the auto insurer’s lawyers insisting that she “should have sped up and gone around or done something to avoid the accident.
“But there was nowhere I could go,” Casey explained. “I had traffic coming up in the right lane, I had oncoming traffic coming towards me. Even had I taken off and gunned it and floored it, he still would have hit me.
“By the time I noticed that he was coming in my rearview, the only thing that I could do was begin to take my hands off the steering wheel. And by then, I was hit.”
“Treated Me Like I Was Family”
Luckily, Casey didn’t have to endure these baseless allegations by herself for very long because fate intervened: “I saw a Hensley commercial.”
Upon dialing the firm’s Fishers offices, Casey was told that “the only thing that I ever had to worry about is if I agreed or didn’t agree. That’s the only decision I had to make.”
And she’s definitely glad that she made it. “If it wasn’t for Hensley,” she believes, “I would not be where I am now.”
Casey credits the support she received from HLG attorney Phil Olsson and case manager Shauna Duke for getting her through this difficult period.
“I hadn’t been involved in anything like this, and it’s just so new,” she said, but “bless Phil’s heart, because he talked me down so many times, and it was just reassuring to have him and Shauna both hold my hand through it all.
“Shauna’s amazing – I love her,” Casey continued, adding that “Phil treated me like I was family, you know? Walked me through something like a father would walk his daughter through it.”
“A Walking Billboard for Hensley”
While they were hard at work keeping Casey’s stress levels down to a minimum, Phil and Shauna worked even harder to exert maximum pressure on the defendants by getting a trial date on the books right away, although the case was ultimately resolved outside of the courtroom.
Following a mediation with every interested party, Hensley managed to secure a substantial settlement that was nearly twice the defense’s initial offer, for which Casey was profoundly grateful, since it’s “really going to help me level up in life.”
Casey is also looking forward to getting the word out about the firm, saying that she “couldn’t be more excited to be like a walking billboard for Hensley.”
