We’re coming into construction season here in Indiana. That means construction zones are going to be popping up on roadways throughout the state. It’s important to know how to safely navigate those construction zones to keep everybody safe.

The speeds in those zones are reduced for the protection of the workers, but also to protect you and the other drivers as well. Not only do those construction zones offer narrow lanes or sudden lane shifts, but sometimes you need to stop abruptly to allow construction traffic to enter the zone or exit the zone. So you need to keep your eyes open, limit distractions, and watch for those hazards.

Reduce your speed. That is the key factor to getting safely through a construction zone. Reduce your speed, increase your following distance. By increasing your following distance, you’re allowing yourself more time to react to any potential hazards that present themselves. Mostly, watch for the signs. The signs are going to let you know if you are in a construction zone and when you’re out of the construction zone.

There’s going to be orange barrels, there’s going to be cones—if you’re seeing things like this along the side, it’s very likely that you are in a construction zone. What does that mean? That means that if you are pulled over for speeding, tailgating, reckless driving, unsafe lane movements—if you’re pulled over for that inside that construction zone, the fines for that are substantially increased. In the Indianapolis area, the minimum speeding ticket fine in a construction zone is over $400. It can also result in jail time. So please, reduce your speed, give those workers room to work, and make it safe for everybody.
