On August 21, a Los Angeles jury handed down a $417 million verdict against Johnson & Johnson in another talcum powder lawsuit.

Eva Echeverria alleged that Johnson & Johnson did not warn consumers like her that its baby powder product could cause ovarian cancer. Echeverria is terminally ill with ovarian cancer that she and her attorney trace back to her regular use of Johnson & Johnson baby powder for feminine hygiene.

“Mrs. Echeverria is dying from this ovarian cancer and she said to me all she wanted to do was to help the other women throughout the whole country who have ovarian cancer for using Johnson & Johnson for 20 and 30 years,” her attorney said.

Johnson & Johnson plans to appeal the verdict.

This is the largest award in a talcum powder lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson to date. Lois Slemp held the previous record in May when a Missouri jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay her $110 million.

Echeverria’s trial was the first held in a California court. Five other cases have gone to trial in St. Louis, Missouri, resulting in 4 wins for plaintiffs and 1 win for Johnson & Johnson.

The five jury verdicts against Johnson & Johnson combined result in a total of about $724 million.
