Eliquis: Uncontrolled Bleeding

What is Eliquis?
Eliquis (apixaban) is a blood thinner similar to Pradaxa and designed to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots for people who suffer from atrial fibrillation (Afib). One of its selling points is that it doesn’t require routine blood tests like Warfarin does. Eliquis is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squib. It was approved by the FDA on December 28th, 2012 for stroke and blood clots and then on March 14, 2014, for DVT and PE for patients who have undergone hip and knee replacement surgeries.
What are the side effects?
The most commonly reported side effect is uncontrolled bleeding. In the two studies used to get FDA approval, Aristotle and Avveroes, major bleeding events were reported in the following areas:
- Gastrointestinal
- Intracranial (Head)
- Intraocular (Eye)
- Fatal
Unlike with Warfarin, there is no known way to stop the bleeding once it has occurred. Patients must wait for the Eliquis to leave their body, which can take up to 24 hours. In August of 2014, Bristol-Myers Squib added a warning to the box that stated,
PREMATURE DISCONTINUATION OF ELIQUIS INCREASES THE RISK OF THROMBOTIC EVENTS.
This warning makes bleeding events even more dangerous because the only treatment for a bleeding event is to stop taking Eliquis. By attempting to stop the bleeding the patient is increasing their risk of stroke.
What are the symptoms of a bleeding event?
- Unexpected Bleeding or Bleeding that won’t stop
- Nose Bleeds
- Red, Pink or Brown Urine
- Red or Black Stools
- Coughing Up Blood
- Unexpected Pain or Swelling
- Headaches, Dizziness or Weakness
