Post-Concussion Syndrome

Post-concussion syndrome is a complication in which symptoms—such as dizziness and headaches—can last for several weeks, months or even longer. What makes this condition unique is that it doesn’t necessarily accompany a severe concussion. It can happen even with a mild head injury.

Treatment is based on the symptoms experienced, which could also include:

  • Light/noise sensitivity
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Memory problems

Other Complications of Concussions

Complications from a severe concussion include:

  • Bleeding in the brain
  • Swelling
  • Blood clots

These require emergency medical attention. It may necessitate medication and/or surgery to stop the bleeding, release pressure or remove a blood clot.

Another complication that can impact someone with a concussion later on is epilepsy. Within the first five years of a head injury, risk of epilepsy is doubled, according to Mayo Clinic.

Other complications may necessitate special therapies, such as helping an individual learn how to better focus or therapy/counseling to deal with depression. In some cases there might be a combination of treatments that help address symptoms.

Complications can lead to anxiety, especially when a concussion from a car accident results in missed time from work and medical bills. Trying to cope with these expenses and ongoing health problems can feel overwhelming. An attorney may provide direction in seeking legal options.
