The family of Samual Azzopardi has initiated a lawsuit against the operators of the Wunderlich cement factory, according to the Melbourne-based Herald Sun. Samual died at age 69 of mesothelioma, allegedly caused by exposure to asbestos as a child and later as an adult.
For twenty years, Samual’s father, Charlie, would come home from work at the Wunderlich cement factory covered in asbestos dust and fibers, contaminating all the furnishing in the house with asbestos and even bringing home pieces of cement which Samual and his siblings used as chalk. Samual was subject to a second period of prolonged exposure to asbestos in 1969 when he used a power saw to cut concrete sheets from Wunderlich to renovate his parents’ bungalow.
It can take decades after a person is exposed to asbestos for mesothelioma to develop. For Samual, he was not diagnosed with mesothelioma until a month before he died. His wife is seeking damages as a dependent of her husband.
