A traumatic brain injury (TBI) after an accident can result in varying degrees of injury, but in the most tragic and severe cases, the brain may be seriously affected to the point of reaching an abnormal state of consciousness. Speak with a team of Indiana lawyers who can answer your questions about managing the financial ramifications of a TBI.
6 Abnormal States of Consciousness from TBI
- Stupor: defined as an unresponsive state in which the patient may still be aroused momentarily by a sharp pain or other comparable stimulus
- Coma: victim is unconscious and unaware and cannot be aroused or woken
- Persistent vegetative state: state of unconsciousness and unawareness in which the patient still experiences a sleep-wake cycle and periods of alertness
- Minimally conscious states: patient may still demonstrate deliberate behavior different from the responsive, unconscious responses of someone in a persistent vegetative state
- Locked-in syndrome: patient may be awake and aware but experiences total bodily paralysis
- Brain death: irreversible loss of brain function that renders a patient’s body unable to regulate involuntary systems without life support
If you or someone you love has suffered the consequences of TBI as a result of an accident caused by someone else’s negligence or recklessness, you may be entitled to financial compensation for your medical expenses, property damage, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
