Drunk Driver Crashes Into Police Officer in Speedway

June 23, 2011 – Speedway, Ind. – An Indianapolis man is facing serious charges after he crashed into a police cruiser while driving drunk. According to a report on channel6NEWSthe DUI accident occurred around 4 a.m. on Saturday.

Authorities say the Speedway police officer was on duty and responding to a call on the city’s north side. The officer was driving on N. Lynhurst Drive when a Buick traveling in the opposite direction swerved into his lane, causing a collision. The police cruiser then crashed into a fence before coming to a stop.

The officer was transported to Methodist Hospital for his injuries. His K-9 partner was also injured in the wreck, although the dog is expected to make a recovery at the Airport Animal Hospital.

The driver who caused this DUI accident has been identified as a 24-year-old man from Indianapolis. Police say they detected alcohol on him at the accident scene. The driver was treated at Wishard Hospital before being placed under arrest. Multiple charges are pending, including driving under the influence, and driving without a valid driver’s license.
