Noninvasive Breast Cancer

This type of cancer refers to cancer that stays in the location where it started; that is, it doesn’t spread to the breast tissue.

“Ductal carcinoma in situ” is the leading type of noninvasive breast cancer diagnosed. Since the cancer stays in the duct and doesn’t spread to the breast’s fatty tissue, successful treatment is possible.

Invasive Breast Cancer

This cancer spreads and invades the tissues that surround it and can even travel to other parts of the body.

Accounting for approximately 80% of invasive forms of breast cancer, infiltrating ductal carcinoma is the most commonly diagnosed type of breast cancer. Infiltrating ductal carcinoma starts in the milk passage or duct and then spreads to the breast’s fatty tissue, where it can begin invading other parts of the body, such as lymph nodes.

Infiltrating lobular carcinoma is another form of invasive breast cancer that begins in the milk glands or lobules and can spread to other body parts. It accounts for approximately 10% of invasive breast cancer cases.
